Strengthening National E-Waste Management for a Sustainable Future

The Central Environmental Authority (CEA), in collaboration with Dialog Axiata PLC, successfully signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and officially launched the eKunu Electronic Waste Collection Programme on 3rd August 2026 at the CEA Auditorium.
The event was held under the patronage of Hon. Dr. Dhammika Patabendi, Minister of Environment, as the Chief Guest. The occasion was also graced by the participation of Hon. Anton Jayakodi, Deputy Minister of Environment; Prof. Thilak Hewawasam, Chairman of the Central Environmental Authority; Mr. Kapila Rajapaksha, Director General of the Central Environmental Authority; Mr. Supun Weerasinghe, Chief Executive Officer of Dialog Axiata PLC, Mr. Asanga priyadarshana, Group Chief Executive of Dialog Axiata PLC; together with senior officials representing government institutions and the private sector.
The eKunu Programme, initiated by Dialog Axiata PLC, is an island-wide electronic waste (e-waste) collection initiative that promotes responsible e-waste disposal and environmentally sound management of electronic waste. Through this partnership, the CEA and Dialog Axiata PLC will further strengthen Sri Lanka's national e-waste management mechanism by enhancing public awareness and expanding accessible e-waste collection facilities through Dialog Customer Service Centres across the country.
Improper disposal of electronic waste can result in adverse impacts on the environment and public health due to the release of hazardous substances. Through the eKunu Programme, individuals can contribute towards minimizing these impacts by ensuring the responsible collection and management of discarded electronic items, supporting national environmental sustainability objectives.
