Kelani River

The CEA has implemented a comprehensive river water quality monitoring programme since 1994 to provide data for water quality management and pollution control purposes.

The Kelani River serves as a vital source of drinking water for the Colombo District, with a key water supply intake point located at Ambatale, approximately 14 kilometres from the river's mouth.

However, sewage from low-income settlements and industrial effluents from numerous industries are frequently discharged into the Kelani River. The lower reaches of the river have experienced saline water intrusion from the ocean, rendering the water non-potable.

Sampling Locations

Seventeen sampling locations have been selected for monitoring of the water quality in Kelani River.
