Bolgoda Lake, the largest natural lake in Sri Lanka, is a semi-closed brackish water estuarine system. For many decades, it supported a thriving commercial finfish fishery, which has been reported to be in decline. The primary cause of this decline is attributed to environmental deterioration due to rapid development in the area.
In response, the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) designated a 60-meter buffer zone from the lake’s boundary as an Environmental Protection Area in 2009. This measure aims to protect the lake's ecosystem from further degradation and preserve its natural resources.
Sampling Locations
Six locations have been selected for monitoring of the water quality in Bolgoda Lake.
