Dr. Koji Takakura Director of the Environmental Research Institute, who introduced the “Takakura Composting Method”to the world for waste management in the year 2004. This Takakura Composting Method is evaluated as expedite composting method using “appropriate technology” or using simple technology and widely adopted in the world such as Asia and Central and South America. Dr. Takakura had been received many Awards for this innovation from the Republic of Indonesia, Republic of Ecuador and Republic of Philippines in 2007 and 2016 respectively.
Considering the needfulness of this method use as urban organic waste management problem and cheap organic fertilizer for home gardens, the CEA organized an awareness program with the assistance of JICA-(Japan International Cooperation Agency) assisted “Pollution Control and Reduction of Environmental Burden in Solid Waste Management Project-(ReEB Waste project) on 15th May 2018.
Dr. Takakura briefly explained about his method, the history of this method and implemented Asian cities. This composting method mainly focusing on intensifying microbial activities using Kitchen waste and supplemented with Sugar, Yeast, Soya Source Etc. Microbial fermentation, aerobic fermentation and proper moisture and heat control are the key technical steps to reach the successful composting method.
In the lecture he demonstrated the initial steps of preparing microbial cultures and the base material which is used to compost kitchen garbage.
Eng.Mr. J M U Indrarathne Deputy Director General, Waste Management welcome Dr. Takakura for the session and staff members actively participated in this program.
