Recognizing the need for protecting Muthurajawela wetland from indiscriminate filling, His Excellency the President directed the Central Environmental Authority to implement a proper strategy for protecting Muthurajawela wetlands.
A special meeting was held on 6th April at the Central Environmental Authority chaired by Mr. Chandrarathne Pallegama new chairman of the CEA to obtain the views of the relevant institutions in this regards and to draw up a strategy for conserving the Muthurajawela wetlands.
At this meeting the officials agreed to re-demarcate the boundaries of the Muthurajawela marsh and to gazette the entire area as a sanctuary under the Department of Wildlife Conservation. Accordingly the new boundary lines of the marsh, which needs to be protected were identified with the aid of Grama Sewaka of each division.
Senior officials from CEA, Ministry of Megapolis and Westren Development, Ministry of Irrigation & Water Resourses Management, Ministry of Lands, Survey Department, Department of Land Commissioner General, Urban Development Authority, Department of Agrarian Development, Sri Lanaka Land Reclamation and Development Cooperation, Department of Wildlife Conservation, Road Development Authority, Divisional Secrataries of Negambo, Ja-ela, Wattala and Katana participated in the meeting.
