The World Wetland Day of this year was held ceremonially, under the theame “Wetlands Action for People and Nature” with the participation of distinguished invitees including the Hon. C B Rathnayake, Minister of Wildlife and Forest Conservation and Hon. Wimalaweera Dissanayake, State Minister of Wildlife Protection, Adoption of Safety Measures including the Construction of Electrical Fences and Trenches and Reforestation and Forest Resource Development at the Ape Gama premises, Battaramulla on 2nd of February 2022.
Annually, this ceremony is organized together by the Central Environment Authority and the Department of Wildlife Conservation and this year the ceremony was organized by the Central Environmental Authority. Focusing the World Wetland Day the Central Environmental Autority conducted an short story and poem competition and the winners of the competiton were awarded with a certificate & Cash prize in this program. Furthermore, the new edition of the “Wonder of Wetland” book was launched in this event. The documentry on “Wetlands of Sri Lanka” was also launched in the occasion to make the audiance aware about the Wetlands. Dr. Priyani Amarasinghe, Senior Reseach Scientist, Representative of IWMI (International Water Management Institute) done the Keynote Speech. The speech was mainly focused on importance of wetlands, how to protect wetland and how to obtian the community engagement to protect wetland ect....
Mr. Somarathne Vidanapathirana, Secratry to the Ministry of Wildlife and Forest Conservation, Mr. S. Amarasinghe, Chairman, CEA, Mr. P B Hemantha Jayasinghe, Director General CEA and Mr. M G C Sooriyabandara, Director Geneal, Department of Wildlife Conservation, also participated in this occasion.
