Pansalathenna – Maussawa Declared as an Environmental Protection Area

The Central Environmental Authority has taken steps to declare the Pansalathenna – Maussawa catchment area as an Environmental Protection Area under the provisions of the National Environmental Act by the Gazette Notification No 2075/15 dated 11.06.2018
Pansalathenna – Maussawa area is situated at the Dombagasdeniya E345A and Halangoda E347A Grama Niladhari Divisions of the Ukuwela Divisional Secretariat Division of the Matale District of the Central Province.

Due to the catchment of the several water bodies (Sudu Ganga, Theppukulama Tank, Moragahakanda Reservoir, etc.) and existence of rich bio diversity with recorded 57 floral and 132 faunal species, this area is considered as an environmentally important area. This is also identified as a landslide prone area by the National Building Research Organization.
The main objective of declaration of Pansalathenna – Maussawa area, is to provide legal protection and to manage sustainably in order to conserve this environmentally important area for the future generation.
