On February 2nd, every year since 1997, the Wetlands Day commemorates all over the world. As an Eco- System, wetlands contribute highly enriched ecological and social role at the global level.
To commemorate the World Wetland Day, the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has organized the National program at the “Ape Gama” premises, Battaramulla.
The event was graced by His Excellency the President Mithripala Sirisena and Hon. Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka,. The heads of its line institutions under the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment and officials of the CEA, Wildlife Conservation Department and other relevant institutions members of the Village Wetlands Committees, sponsors, school & university students were participated in the event.
The guest lecture was done by Prof. Devaka Weerakoon, Senior Lecture, Department of Zoology, and University of Colombo. Prof. Weerakoon emphasized the importance of wetlands, its high biodiversity, how wetlands contribute to our socioeconomic activities and the reasons to declare wetlands as Environmental Protection Areas and why need to be conserved on wetlands and so on.
As one of the activities of the World Wetland Day National Program, CEA conducted an Inter-university Photographic Competition. The winners of the competition were also awarded at the event by the Hon. President Mithripala Sirisena.
The event was glamour with the two dancing items done by the Ananda College, Colombo and Thakshila Vidyalaya, Horana.
