According to the legal provisions, manufacturing, trading and usage of any kind of polythene or any polythene related product having the thickness of 20 microns or less has been banned by the regulation published in the Gazette Extra Ordinary No.1466/5 on 10th October 2006.
According to newly introduced regulations several types of poly ethylene products and some poly styrene products such as lunch sheet made out of Polyethylene (HDPE, LDPE) and Poly propylene, shopping bags and grocery bags made out of High Density Polythylene (HDPE) and Polystyrene lunch boxes have been banned with effect from 1st of September 2017
While the regulation is there, those banned products are still in the market. Therefore, the Waste Management Unit of CEA called a press conference to aware further decisions on this regards on 19.12.2017 at the CEA Auditorium.
Prof. Lal Mervin Dharmasiri, Chairman CEA emphasized the rules and regulations and he further expressed about the polythene banning for the polythene decorations for the upcoming election season. Without any categorization polythene decorations for Electoral purpose is totally banned.
At the conference, also showcased the research findings on the polythene banning issue and it were also shown the positive comments on this rule. Also, it had showed the needfulness of alternative and the availability of biodegradable products.
Two Sri Lankan companies who are manufacturing biodegradable products also presented at the press conference and they showcased their biodegradable bags and lunch sheet which is manufactured according to the International guidelines.
