The 13th Environmental Pioneer National Camp was held from 23rd to 26th August 2017 at the National College of Education, Hatton with the participation of 231 Environmental Pioneer Gold Medalists hailed from 41 Schools Islandwide.
The main objectives of holding such program are to give broader knowledge on environmental awareness, attitudinal changes, practical experience, who was participating as the key messengers of environmental protection and conservation in the school society. The inaugural ceremony was held on 24th of August at 4.00 pm with the participation of Mr. Wasanthe Disanayake Additional Secretary, Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment, Prof. Lal Mervin Dharmasiri, Chairman CEA, Mr. Hemantha Jayasinghe, Director General CEA and Mr. E P T K Ekanayake, Provincial Education Director, Central Province. The ceremony was glamour with the performance done by students of Madeniya Vidyalaya, Hatton and Norwood Tamil Maha Vidyalaya.Tea Research Institute, Thalawakele, Mini Hydro Power Plant, Lindula, Upper Kothmale Power Plant, Mount Vernan Estate and Cregliea Estate were the five places that pioneers participated to obtain practical experience in the field.
Several lectures were also arranged for the pioneers to obtain knowledge in different fields and that were Sustainable Development done by Mr. Eranga Dilhan, Deputy General Manager, Sustainable Development, MAS Kreeda, Brief introduction on Field visit done by Prasanna Watagoda, Divisional Environmental officer Nuwaea Eliya District Office, CEA, Environmental factors that influence Dengue disease done by Dr. Jinadaree Amarasena, Nuwara Eliya Divisional Epidemiologist and Ms. Kanchana Keerthisena, Development Assistant, National Craft Council.
Cultural program is one of the enchanting program that showcases different cultural events by pioneers representing their schools. An especial folk art cultural program was performed by “Ranwala Balakaya” which was enthusiastic the audience.
On 26th of August, the 13th Environmental Pioneer National Camp was successfully concluded at Sripada National College of Education, Kotagala.
