Importance

• A lowland rainforest with rich biodiversity.

• Home to 164 plant species, including 68 endemics, and 220 animal species, 85 of which are endemic and 89 classified as threatened. Notable species include globally endangered mammals such as the Sri Lankan black monkey and the fishing cat, as well as the rare orchid Maha Padma (Podochilus warnagalenis).

• The area serves as a water catchment for the Kuru Ganga and is culturally significant as part of the pilgrimage route to Sri Pada.

• It also holds archaeological, educational, and research value.
