CEA, having identified the importance of management of the E- waste within the country, the Ministry of Environment and Natural resources imposed an Environment Conservation Levy on the value of the services supplied by the cellular phone operators based on the polluter pays principle. It is expected to disburse these funds for proper E- waste management practices within the country. Considering the key activities that have to be lined up for the management of the E-waste in Sri Lanka, strengthening the existing E-waste management system has been identified as a high priority activity by the CEA. The Central Environmental Authority as responsible regulatory body for the environment management, we are glad to have this opportunity with the same mind private party which is Dialog Telekom PLC to initiate a project for the management of used mobile phones.

The main objective of this project is to establish and strengthen a system on sound management of used mobile phones and their accessories and increase the attentiveness of the public and private parties for proper e-waste management. According to that, we have established a used mobile waste collection network with identified locations and install the waste collecting boxes and also the improve collection mechanism, transportation and storage facility. We jointly initiate awareness programs for school children, public private parties involved in the Mobile phone selling and repairing.

At present these drop off facilities (used mobile phones, mobile phone batteries and charges) are available at all Dialog Arcades and Provincial offices, and District Offices of the Central Environmental Authority and also available at several Academic Institutions.
