NEWS - GIS based Digital Resource Information System
Research and Special Project Unit of CEA commenced a programme in 2007 to develop a GIS based central resource information system for CEA. Once compiled, environmental, ecological and socio-economic information will be available in one database. The system has been designed to include environmental information on sensitive areas such as forests, wetlands, water springs, wildlife reserves and water falls etc. as well as industries, schools and roads etc. In addition, archeological sites and socio economic data have been included in the system, survey to collect data at Gramma Niladari level commenced in 2008 initially in two provinces namely the Southern and Central. Presently, survey is being carried out in five provinces namely the Western, Uva, Sabaragomuwa, North- Central and Eastern. This information system has a facility to generate spatially referenced maps where GPS points of locations industries, schools, telecommunication towers, water springs and wetland etc are included. Another important feature of this system is that a digital base map generated in this system can be overlaid with data or other layers of information onto a another map in order to view spatial information and relationships among different land use types. This would help in decision making with a minimum impact on the environment. Digital information stored in the system could be used for generating environmental models that could be used for environmental management, analysis and monitoring. In addition, baseline data of industries plays vital role in monitoring their activities specially in respect of pollution issues. Finally this information system will be a great asset to CEA, as it gives baseline information on environmental resources as well as industrial data which will be very useful for a manager in making wise decisions. Comprehensive media Compact Disc (CD) including the information will also be developed for each district for sale.
