The Central Environmetal Authority (CEA) was established in August 1981 under the provision of the National Environmental Act No:47 of 1980. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (ME&NR) which was established in December 2001 has the overall responsibility in the affairs of the CEA with the objective of integrating environmental considerations in the development process of the country. The CEA was given wider regulatory powers under the National Environment (Amendment) Acts No:56 of 1988 and No:53 of 2000.

Central Environmental Authority celebrates its 30th Anniversary
Central Environmental Authority organized an Environmental Forum on “Greening the Economy” to mark its 30th Anniversary which was held at the Waters Edge, Battaramulla on 18th August 2011. [Full Story]

Chemical Accident Prevention and Preparedness programme
The Central Environmental Authority with the assistance of the Asian Disaster Management Center in Thailand and the UNEP division of Business, Industry and Commerce in Paris have initiated a Programme on “Chemical Accident Prevention and Preparedness” and its opening ceremony and the first awareness workshop was held in February in Sri Lanka on 14th and 15th of February 2011 at Hotel Berjaya, Mount Lavinia. A TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PIONEER COORDINATING OFFICERS ON SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

DISTRIBUTION OF WASTE COLLECTING TRACTORS TO 19 LOCAL AUTHORITIES
Waste collecting tractors, tractor engines and trailors worth Rs.19 million were distributed among 19 local authorities by Hon. The Central Environmental Authority joins hands with the Department of Animal Production & Health of the Ministry of Livestock and Rural Community Development and the Ministry of Health to control pollutants discharged into environment from livestock farms in Sri Lanka. CEA assists registered laboratories and consultants to build their capacities
Pollution Control Division of Central Environmental Authority organized an awareness workshop on 1st of July 2010 at its head office Battaramulla for laboratories and consultants to assist them to build their capacities in environmental pollution control field thereby supporting Sri Lanka’s development efforts. Thirty Three environmental pollution control consultants and twenty two environmental laboratories have been registered under this scheme. [Full Story]
