     Research & Special project unit.
 
operates under the Environmental Management and Assessment Division of the CEA. The main goal of the unit is to contribute towards successful implementation of the objectives set by the CEA in order to improve and maintain of the quality of environment of Sri Lanka by way of conducting, coordinating and facilitating environmental research, surveys and dissemination of information. This unit is fully equipped with a GIS and Remote Sensing Laboratory.

  1. Environmental Resource Information System of Sri Lanka

Objective of this study is to develop and Environmental Resource Information System for the country which can be used as a tool for environmental management, planning, monitoring and awareness activities. This spatial database will include Environmentally related information such as water resources, wetlands, forest, wildlife and archaeological monuments etc. and socio economic data at the Grama Niladari level.

  1. Industrial Survey

Objective of this survey is to develop an Industrial data base with spatial information of industries of ‘A’ , ‘B’ and ‘C’ categories.    This information would later be used to monitor industrial activities

  12. Preparation of digital maps using satellite images for National Wetland directory (2005-2006)

  13. Selection of engineered landfill sites in Hambantota district (2007) (Multiple criteria analysis and spatial analysis)

  14. Developed methodologies for Land cover mapping using satellite images in Eastern province (2005).

  15. Post Tsunami Environmental Restoration Projects  -was implemented to help Tsunami affected communities by introducing some model solutions to overcome environment pollution related consequences.
  1.  Estimation of Forest Carbon using Satellite images- A study carried out  to develop satellite image derived model to estimate carbon content in different types of plantation forest in Sri Lanka.
