The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) was established in August 1981 under the provision of the National Environmental Act No:47 of 1980. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (ME&NR) which was established in December 2001 has the overall responsibility in the affairs of the CEA with the objective of integrating environmental considerations in the development process of the country. The CEA was given wider regulatory powers under the National Environment (Amendment) Acts No:56 of 1988 and No:53 of 2000.

New Director General is appointed for CEA
Mrs Ramani Ellepola, former Deputy Director General ( Environmental Management Assessment) of Central Environmental Authority has been appointed as the Director General of Central Environmental Authority. [Full Story]

CEA assists registered laboratories and consultants to build their capacities
Pollution Control Division of Central Environmental Authority organized an awareness workshop on 1st of July 2010 at its head office Battaramulla for laboratories and consultants to assist them to build their capacities in environmental pollution control field thereby supporting Sri Lanka’s development efforts. Thirty Three environmental pollution control consultants and twenty two environmental laboratories have been registered under this scheme. [Full Story]
Hon. Minister agreed to release Rs. 13.4 million to the Solid waste Management
NEWS - Hon. Minister agreed to release Rs. 13.4 million to the Solid waste Management The Hon. Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, Minister of Environment agreed to release Rs. 13.4 million for the implementation of solid waste management projects under taken by various organizations under the “ Pilisaru Project”. As an initial step, the minister distributed cheques to the value of over Rs. 4 million among the 5 institutions at a function held on 05.07.2010 at CEA head office to implement the solid waste management projects in their respective areas. Environment Minister’s visit to Dumping Site.
Environment Minister Hon. Anura Priyadharsana Yapa accompanied by Chairman Mr. Charitha herath of the Central Environmental Authority visited on an inspection tour of the solid waste dumping site at Karathyana Thumbowila, Ratmalana. [Full Story]
Visit of new Chairman to Canal Project
The newly appointed Chairman, of Central Environmental Authority Mr. Charitha herath visited the canal project implemented by the Sri Lankan Navy on 26.05.2010 on an inspection tour. An awareness programme was conducted by the CEA. He discussed with the relevant officers on future plans of the canal upgrading project at Board embarcation point at Nawala. Under this project, Kirulappane - Diyawanna and Kirulappane -Dehiwala canals in Colombo are being cleaned as a pilot project. [Full Story]

“BOLGODA LAKE SYSTEM IS DECLARED AS AN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AREA BY CEA”
The Bolgoda lake system situated in the administrative districts of Colombo and Kalutara of the Western Province of Sri Lanka has been declared as an Environmental Protection Area by the Central Environmental Authority, as per Part V of the National Environmental Act No. 47 of 1980, by Gazette No. 1634/23 dated 30.12.2009.
